Jungles - Holy Fuck

Before I begin, Holy Fuck is an experimental electronic band from Toronto, that has reached fame recently by having one of their songs (Lovely Allen) put into a car commercial, which seems to be the trend of rising indie bands thesedays, car commercials. This track (to my knowledge) was never released on any of Holy Fuck's albums or EPs. I heard it first at one of their shows I went to way back in September 2008. I seached every Holy Fuck album and EP I could for this song, but had no such luck, then some time later Holy Fuck posted it on their myspace page, I got ahold of it from some really sketchy file uploading website, it's now re-hosted on rapidshare for your downloading pleasure, as rapidshare doesn't have any popups, unlike the site where I got it. The whole song is played in a rising action, until finally there's a huge drop close to the end and the song gets intense.

Album - Girls + The Finer Things Club

This album was released a while ago, I've just been very lethargic lately and forgot about my blog. Anyways it dropped a month or so ago and people loved it, it's got a real '60s jangle-y guitar sound, which has been compared to the likes of Elvis Colstello. I thought the album was really catchy. The lyrics are really mopey though, which some people love because they feel they can relate to it. But lately I haven't been in the mood for it (I still liked the album however) My favorite track on the whole album has got to be 'Lust For Life', it's incredibly catchy and has a real 60's pop-rock atmosphere to it. A music video was released for the song as well, which was basically a video collage of teenagers getting into shenanigans (with sexy results) with a video filter which made the whole thing look really old. Shortly after the release of the cool video, they released a NSFW version which had nudity which was cool, then they threw in some naked men which made me a little uncomfortable. (being the heterosexual that I am, not that there's anything wrong with homosexuality) So i guess it evened the boobies to penis ratio evened out, which is fair, they had to make it appeal to everyone. (I will not be linking the NSFW video, go find it yourself)

The Finer Things Club
Since I use this blog to recommend music I like I thought I might as well use it to also promote my new solo music project/band (whatever you wanna call it) The Finer Things Club. I love music so much I took the liberty to create my own. I've already recorded two songs which can both be heard on the Myspace page (But I plan to re-record 'Riding Shotgun In My Car' as the outro was just not how I wanted it to be) Please listen, and if you like it please tell me so, as I love to recieve compliments, it's what gets me out of bed in the morning. If you feel there's something I could improve on, aside from recording quality, as I am using the microphone that came with the video game Rock Band, also let me know! But please don't be rude about it. If I stay motivated and focused enough to record a lot of songs I may start releasing them.

Excision & DatsiK - Swagga

It's been quite a while since I've made my last post, I've been really occupied with school, so here's something new, the track is called 'Swagga' and it's by 'Excision & Datsik', it's a dubstep song, the drop is bananas though. I heard it originally through Rusko's mix for the clothing company Mishka. I really like dubstep and got really into it a few months ago, but what I wanna know is if a DJ spins it at a club how do people dance to it? It boggles me.
(the drop starts at 0:50 if you wanna skip ahead)

Twinkle Echo - Casiotone For The Painfully Alone

This album is by no means new, it's been out for a while now, it was actually released in 2003. However I am sure there are plenty of people who have never heard this album, or even of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone; the solo project of Owen Ashworth - a harmless looking gent with a nice beard. Now Owen (or Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, or CTFPA for my sake as I do not feel like writing out the entire name every time.) has released 5 Albums, 4 EPs, and plenty of singles. However Twinkle Echo stood out for me, as it is the only album of his discography where I actually enjoyed and loved each and every track on the entire album (which is rare for me because when I get an album I usually only like maybe 3 - 5 songs on it, and the rest are just par), I'm not saying I didn't like his other albums either, because I do and I await another album from CTPFA (jesus even the acronym is long).

Twinkle Echo has 14 tracks, and each one means something different and special to me personally, as his lyrics are simple and relatable, yet at the same time are far from childish and silly. Most of his lyrics pertain to his previous love interests, or to his own personal experiences in life, dealing with things such as driving to Phoenix in a Toyoto Corolla, to his high score in Scrabble. My favorite song on the album contains lyrics from various songs by The Smiths. His accompanies his lyrics with simplistic and catchy lo-fi synth riffs made with cheap keyboards and drum machines whose drum samples can be related to that of a '90s computer printer. CTPFA's songs are also really short, which some may debate means that it's cutting out content, however I believe by keeping things short, it prevents him of overstaying his welcome by killing time with unnecessary filler. His songs are straight to the point and I like it.
  1. "To My Mr. Smith" - 1:52
  2. "Jeane, if You're Ever in Portland" - 2:28
  3. "Toby, Take a Bow" - 1:59
  4. "It Wasn't the Same Somehow" - 2:21
  5. "Hey Eleanor" - 1:29
  6. "Half Ghost" - 3:04
  7. "Calloused Fingers Won't Make You Strong, Edith Wong" - 1:43
  8. "Blue Corolla" - 2:03
  9. "Casiotone For the Painfully Alone in a Yellow T-Shirt" - 2:18
  10. "Students for Scarves & Charm" - 0:55
  11. "Roberta C." - 3:45
  12. "Attic Room" - 3:08
  13. "Giant - 2:08
  14. "Twinkle Echo" - 0:39

Digital Manges - Manges (Sharkslayer Remix)

Best Club / Electro track of the summer, perhaps the year,

It's got this really cool offbeat sample in it which doesn't sync properly with the bassline (purposely of course, it wasn't an amateur mistake), it's very unique, definitely haven't heard anything like this in a while. I really dig it. I've never heard the original track, just the remix, but I assume the remix is much better.

I have high hopes for this, and if it doesn't make it to the top of the charts, well then it'll just stay our little secret.

So Much Love To Give - DJ Falcon & Thomas Bangalter

I've heard of DJ Falcon before I heard this, in fact i first heard one of his songs around last October or November (Don't really remember when but it wasn't quite winter yet, but it was still cold) I dismissed his music quickly as generic French House music (not that I don't like house, quite the opposite really I love house music) but it sounded too boring for me to really continue listening, I heard two of his songs then moved on. But recently one of his songs came back to me, but this one wasn't one his solo songs, this song was made under a house duo that he was a member of called 'Together' which consists of him and Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk) and I heard it because it was the last song Crookers played as part of their Lollapalooza set, I liked it but has no idea what the song was called, and thanks to youtube and google I was reunited with the song a week later. Anyone who likes daft punk will love this track.
it's so happy

Two New Songs

It's been quite a while since my last post, but I have not forgotten about my blog, it is still active, every now and then I open up a new post for myself and begin to type, however once I reach one sentance into my blog post, my lethargic tendencies kick in and I close the page and move onto something else. I think it is because I feel that there are not enough people reading this for me to continue, however the original purpose of this blog was to cure boredom which is what I am doing now, as I sit in my basement at 8:30 on a a nice summer night, unable to go outside because I have work tommorow at eight in the morning. In the last week I have come across two new (well one is new, and the other might not be that new, but is new to me and probably to you too)

The first new song that actually is new is called 'WE ARE WATER' (caps intended) by HEALTH, which will be on their new album 'GET COLOR' (as seen above) which is set for release in the fall. Very noisy. Very intense. Also quite good, however, as well as HEALTH'S other single 'Die Slow' it is somewhat more structured, which is a bit of a letdown because the first album gave me the impression that it would be chaotic and noisy, and not just noisy. I still kind of liked the track, now as much as Die Slow, but it was still good and I like it a lot. Also sorry about all the brackets and caps lock.
The second song, which I am still trying to get details on, is by Crystal Castles. It's called 'Baptism', and as far as I know, it is a song that is only played live and hasn't been recorded in a studio (but hook me up if you can find a studio recorded version) Sounded a little bit like their other song Air War. I first heard it when they played it at lollapalooza, and after that day i went back to my hotel room and found it on youtube. I've posted two live versions:
On another note, summer is almost over.

8. My chances of seeing the Beastie Boys at Lollapalooza
9. American Apparel

More to come soon. (But I hope not)

I Got A Lot (New New New) - Mika Miko

The picture you are currently viewing above this text is Indie Punk band Mika Miko loitering outside of The Smell, a venue in downtown Los Angeles where hipsters gather to listen the venue's regular bands which include No Age and HEALTH. I discovered this band through Myspace Music (which is a first as the bands on the page are usually a pile of shit) and this band really clicked with me. Their music has a No Age sound to it, and in the song "I Got a Lot (New New New)" (which is what this post is about) a bit of a Surf Rock sound to it. I really liked this track, it was really catchy and unlike some songs where I have to listen to it a few times to like it, this one just instantly caught on. The song also has a music video, the way they dress in the video reminds me of Pulp Fiction.

Young Hearts Spark Fire - Japandroids

You know it's been a while since I've had something that was fun to listen to. And by fun I mean a song that is completely cheery with happy and careless lyrics. I don't remember how I stumbled across this song (I think youtube) Recently I've also been listening to a lot of bands with only two members for some reason (No Age, Wavves) and I guess I now have this band to add to the list. Japandroids are an Indie Garage Rock band from Vancouver.
Whenever I listen to a song or a set of songs by one artist a lot in a short period of time and then I listen to it in the future, I think back to the time when I listened to it a lot, sometimes it makes me remember that specific season of the year, or a vacation I took with my family, this song will definitely make me think back to this summer, I can just tell, I really like this song a lot, and I would buy the whole album, but you can only buy it on vinyl, so I have to wait for the next time I go to Toronto to buy it.
check the song out on youtube:
or on their myspace (they also have other songs from that album on it):

Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles (Album)

Xiu Xiu's (prounounced shoe shoe) Fabulous Muscles, is pretty old now, I first listened to a few songs on this album while my family and I were on my way to one of our neighbor's cottage when I first moved to my new house (It was the summer of 2006 actually). The albums actual release date was even further back in 2004. I really like 4 of the 10 tracks, but never really gave the rest of the album a chance until I re-listened to it recently. Xiu Xiu is an Indie Art Rock band from Oakland California. This is the only album I listened to so far by them, but I recently also attained some of their other albums too. Check out this album, I really enjoyed listening to it

My favorite track is 'I Love The Valley, OH!', it had the vocals of Ian Curtis with the experimental sound of Radiohead's album Hail to the Thief:

I also enjoyed 'Clowne Towne'

DIE SLOW 7INCH SINGLE - HEALTH

Noise rock band HEALTH recently tossed out a new 7" single: DIE SLOW, I heard it on their myspace page and I was supposed to go today to Toronto and buy it, but I woke up too late and missed my chance, (I'll probably pick it up tommorow, if not then next week) It's really good. Not so much noise rock as their other songs though, which left me dissapointed as I was expecting the song to be more disorganized and reckless and less structured. Don't get me wrong however, I still really enjoyed it, I just hope their new album (which comes out some time this year) is as good as their first one.

You can listen to it on youtube:

or on their myspace (for better quality), check out some of their other tracks on their myspace, I love them all:

Sure You Will - Justice

I don't think Justice needs an introduction or an explanation, because if you've never heard of 'D.A.N.C.E' then you should seriously consider joining the rest of us in the 21st century. Personally I think that people who have only heard D.A.N.C.E and none of Justice's other tracks can be called Justice fans. Well actually that statement was more so common sense than it was an opinion. However, bact to the point I was trying to get at: the thing with Justice is that, aside from The album Cross, the single 'We Are Your Friends' and perhaps the Planisphere EP, none of Justice's other tracks have really made it anywhere, but to be honest, if you actually go digging for them, they're quite good.

A lot of their tracks before Cross were different then what you'd expect of Justice: it wasn't so much the trademark distorted synth and slap bass that normally comes to mind, it's totally different. First example is the first pre-Cross track I found: Sure You Will. Which never really made it anywhere except onto some random French Electro/Pop compliation album that also never really made it anywhere. I actually found this track over youtube, when somehow I foolishly thought I had stumbled upon a leaked Justice track, and seconds later, after finding out it was a fake, in the sidebar thing I spotted 'Sure You Will - Justice (Rare)' and gave it a listen, it was fantastic.

It started off like some sort of cheery '80s Synth/House track, and remained like that throughout the entire song, it didn't really pick up anywhere, it just stayed at a happy, moderate pace. It also contains some vocals which kind of reminded me of 'DVNO' because I could've swore it was the same person singing. What I really liked about it is it's happiness, it really was a cheery track, it wasn't really something you'd hear playing at a club, but that's okay it doesn't have to be, and I'm not nineteen yet anyways (to my dismay, as Busy P is playing at the Wrongbar soon)

As I find more Pre-Cross tracks by Justice, I will post them, most of them never made it anywhere though, so I may have to do a big of digging on the net to find them, but once I do they will make on here for sure.

Cass McCombs - PREfection

CASS McCOMBS is an Indie Rock artist from Concord, California. His first EP however, 'Not The Way' was recorded in Baltimore. I found out about Cass McCombs (regrettably) through a skate video (nothing wrong with skate videos, it's just that usually they tend to have bad tracks, however Bag of Suck had excellent music). I got PREfection first because it was the album that the song I heard was from. I really liked the rest of the album, his lyrics and vocals seem to reflect those of Morrissey's, who's singing style and haircut seems to be the latest craze.

The album opens up with it's first track, 'Equinox', which is a slower paced song, however it is a pretty good introduction; not amazing, but good, as it set the perfect atmosphere that the album was aiming for. The next track: 'Subtraction' had more of a catchy synthpop sound to it and the albums speed picks up, however drops once again due to the slower pace of 'Multiple Suns' which sounded pretty boring to me, I didn't find it to be a good song, it was slow and unappealing, and didn't really fit in with the rest of the album because it sounded too much like garage rock to me. It is followed by 'Tourist Woman', which is another synth-y track with a bit of a rock sound that picks up closer towards the middle, then the song collapses entirely at the end.

Things start to really heat up with 'Sacred Heart', which is the albums most popular track - for a reason. I can definitely tell why it is so popular, and I can also see Cass Mccomb's influence of The Smiths in this track especially. With heartfelt lyrics and a very good introduction (an ancient Chinese tune?) I can see what all the hype is about. This was, without a doubt, my favorite track on the album.

Everything began to slow down again (as if Sacred Heart was the climax) with 'She's Still Suffering' which reminded me (god knows why) of Peter Bjorn and John, I don't think the song share any direct relation, however I still feel a connection, a vibe, within this song. Moving forward, the next song is 'Cuckoo' which lead me to believe that Cass McCombs has an obsession with the Organ sounding effect that is included on every synthesizer as well as the ones you can buy at your local Wal-Mart, as it is included on 4 out of the 10 tracks (including 'Cuckoo') I also got another Peter Bjorn and John vibe from the next track 'Bury Mary', but I can sense it more on Bury Mary than on She's Still Suffering.

It continues with 'City of Brotherly Love' which has a good sound to it, a very happy and mellow track that is excellent to listen to whilst maxin' and relaxin'. The album ends on 'All Your Dreams May Come True' a 10 minute long track (4 minutes of it being a song, the other 6 minutes sounds like a cheap car alarm being recorded on a cassette tape) which kind of reminded me of The Cure, because of the synth and simple guitar riffs and when it ended I could have swore that the lyrics kept repeating 'don't bother', but after further inspection I have come to realize it actually says 'what bother' (which doesn't make sense to me)

I really enjoyed a lot of tracks on this album, I reccommend it to anyone who is a fan of The Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, or Peter Bjorn & John. This album wasn't amazing, but it was pretty good, and I give it a thumbs up.

Track Listing

1. "Equinox" - 3:35
2. "Subtraction" - 3:49
3. "Multiple Suns" - 5:22
4. "Tourist Woman" - 3:47
5. "Sacred Heart" - 4:06
6. "She's Still Suffering" - 5:20
7. "Cuckoo" - 4:05
8. "Bury Mary" - 2:18
9. "City of Brotherly Love" - 4:29
10. "All Your Dreams May Come True" - 10:32

DD/MM/YYYY + Dan Deacon Tonight!

Hey there,

I've made 3 blog posts in almost 24 hours! Well that's because shit is getting real this weekend. I'm going to see two bands perform tonight at the Deleon White Gallery (Which is some art gallery on dufferin that I've never heard of). The Opener (which is in the picture on the left) is called DD/MM/YYYY (pronounced Day Month Year) which is an indie experimental band from Toronto. I love experimental music, it's just so strange that I am intrigued by it. DD/MM/YYYY is pretty underground at the moment, but their stuff is pretty nifty, not amazing, but I'm sure it will be a jolly good opener.

The headliner (pictured on the left), whom I've been anticipating for a long time, is named Dan Deacon. He is an indie electronic producer straight from Baltimore. His sound cannot be described using words, as it is just too odd, but if I absolutely had to, it sounds like a pre-pubescent Holy Fuck on LSD. He uses a variety of instruments, from Keyboards, to other things I have never seen before. The coolest thing is that he refuses to use a stage (not that the venue even has a stage anyways, it's an art gallery) and he performs on the floor with the fans standing around him, and he usually asks the audience to play games, such as opening a huge hole in the middle of the crowd, and asking everyone to run in a spiral with two people dancing in the middle. We're driving to the venue because it's in a somewhat shady area of Toronto. We usually take the train and just walk, but late at night in that area is a nay-nay. I think i'm bringing a digital camera to the show to take pictures, which is something that i never usually do in fear of it breaking, but I don't think the audience will be large enough for it to be broken.
It starts at 8 PM tonight, and ends at around midnight, but i also have to go to school tommorow. But it's okay, I'll catch up on my sleep in the car and during 1st period.
you can check their music out at:

Saturday, May 9, 2009

Oh hello.

I just made a blog, I don't know what I will use it for, but it seems like the cool thing to do these days is to make one and post things on it for others to lurk and read. I think I may perhaps be too young to have my own blog, because everyone else who does is usually a few years older than me. I did notice one girl a year younger than me had one, but it was garbage, her posts were useless and she always recommends her readers awful music (I won't reccomend music that sucks I promise)

Well, I truly have nothing to write about as of right now, perhaps when something that pops into my head that I deem interesting arises I will make a new post, but until then I have nothing.

Stay tuned, boppers.
